RAMALLAH, August 12, 2012 (WAFA) – The prime headline in al-Quds Arabic newspaper Sunday highlighted statements by Presidential secretary Tayyeb Abdul Rahim supporting the Egyptian procedures against terrorist attacks, including closing tunnels connecting Egypt with the Gaza Strip.
News on the Egyptian investigations on the attack on an Egyptian border checkpoint in Sinai that killed 16 Egyptian soldiers appeared on the front page of al-Ayyam; while al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted political analysts saying the attack might push Hamas movement to play a bigger role in controlling Gaza borders.
Al-Quds reported that Israeli soldiers stationed along the borders with Gaza shot and injured a Palestinian teenager, 17, while Israeli navy opened fire at Palestinian fishermen boats off the shore of Gaza city on Saturday.
On the other hand, the dominant theme in both Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida featured the ongoing violent outbreaks between the Syrian army and the opposition in Aleppo and Damascus; while US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed contingency plans with Turkish officials, during her visit to Istanbul, and expressed concern over the relations between Syria, Iran, and Hezbollah.
