RAMALLAH, May 31, 2012 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Thursday criticized Israel’s determination to change the international terms of references and violate international resolutions causing a deadlock in the peace process.
He said during a press conference after receiving the German President Joachim Gauck in the presidential headquarters in Ramallah that he discussed with his counterpart the latest developments regarding the peace process and the obstacles facing it.
Abbas reiterated the Palestinian Authority’s position regarding establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital only through negotiations with Israel.
However, he said, Israel has put obstacles in the way of the peace process by not honoring the terms of reference for the talks and through its settlement activities in the occupied territories, mainly in occupied East Jerusalem.
He commended Germany for its political support of the two-state solution and significant economic support.
On the other hand, Gauck affirmed his country’s support for peace in the Middle East and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
He said that while his country is committed to the two-state solution, he appreciates Abbas’ commitment to negotiations to reach a solution.
Gauck said that Germany’s main concern is education and security, therefore it will grant the PA 70 million euros to support these two sectors.
